Canadian Olympic Athletes Visit Local Schools

Bonnyville, AB and Cold Lake, AB - (June 7, 2004) - EnCana is pleased to host Bobsleigh National team member Jayson Krause and Skeleton Olympian Lindsay Alcock in its operating communities of Cold Lake, Bonnyville and at the Elizabeth Metis Settlement. The Olympians will be visiting local schools and sharing their perspectives on how commitment, perseverance, and hard work relates to success at the Olympics, and in life in general.

The school presentations are part of the Canada Sport Centre in Calgary's Youth Education through Sport (Y.E.S.) program, sponsored by EnCana. The Y.E.S. program promotes qualities of self-esteem, respect, dedication, commitment and belief in oneself primarily by providing athlete role models as speakers in communities.

"At EnCana, we believe that young people are a valued resource," said Darci-Jane McAulay, Regional Coordinator for Community Investment. "We are committed to the communities in which we operate, and feel that by offering programs such as Y.E.S. we are helping encourage our youth to achieve their potential."

Krause has been a bobsleigh athlete for seven years. Starting off as a brakeman, Krause is now a pilot for Canada's national team. In the short period spanning his piloting career to date, he won the two-man Canadian Championship last year and repeated his victory as the four-man Canadian champion.

Alcock represented Canada at the Salt Lake Olympics in 2002. Having just finished a successful season, Alcock holds a silver medal and a world title. She also holds push records at three tracks across the continent. Fundamentally, Alcock believes that the same drive used to excel in sports can also be used to excel in any kind of lifelong commitment.

The athletes will be stopping at several schools throughout the day within Bonnyville, Cold Lake, and the Elizabeth Metis Settlement - H.E. Bourgoin, Nelson Heights, Grand Centre, R.A. Reynolds, Elizasch School, and Le Goff. Each presentation is about fifty minutes in length. Following the speakers, EnCana will be presenting schoolchildren with kites and soccer balls to enjoy throughout the summer months.
