Natural gas 101

Natural Gas. Clean, affordable and abundant energy to meet growing North American demand.

When natural gas is burned it produces energy. This energy is used as a source for heating and electricity generation as well as an alternative fuel for transportation. When burned, natural gas also produces the energy that we use to make things like paper and plastic, television and toys, to name only a few.

Vast natural gas reserves are found in various rock formations and sedimentary basins across North America in the form of conventional and unconventional resources. Until recently, it was not economically feasible to extract natural gas from unconventional sources. However, the emergence of advanced drilling technologies has allowed us to unlock this resource once believed to be unreachable. Encana now holds an enviable portfolio of unconventional resource plays that makes up about 95 percent of our overall operations.

The sheer abundance of natural gas in Canada and the U.S., due in part to the development of unconventional sources of natural gas, makes it affordable to the consumer. With an estimated 100 years supply at current production rates, natural gas is the clear energy choice in creating a secure and stable energy future.

did you know?

Every year, Canadians and Americans use more than 6.7 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to heat our homes and water, dry our clothing, cook our food, power our vehicles and light our buildings.
