Three-time Canadian Olympian luger Sam Edney meets with a student at Dawson Creek's Devereaux Elementary as part of the Classroom Champion program.
Encana is a proud supporter of Classroom Champions, an organization that connects top athletes with students across Canada and the United States.
Building on the success of the program in Dawson Creek, British Columbia, this year Encana has invited five more classrooms in Dawson Creek and Grande Prairie, Alberta to take part.
Through Classroom Champions students receive video lessons and live chats with Olympians, Paralympians and Olympic/Paralympic games hopefuls throughout the entire school year and form authentic, life changing relationships.
The program encourages youth to set goals, have perseverance and provides the tools for them to succeed one step at a time.
In the first year of Encana’s support in Dawson Creek, Classroom Champions connected Olympian Sam Edney to Devereaux Elementary.
Sam is a three-time Canadian Olympian in luge who competed at the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi. He worked with the students through videos and live chats and video-conferenced with them from Sochi. As well, he made a special in-person visit to the school along with Encana staff to meet students and their families and see firsthand the positive effects of the program. To learn about the visit to Devereaux Elementary, watch the video.
Classroom Champions also supports teachers by helping them integrate activities into curriculum. The lessons support letter writing, reading, geography, math, technology, goal setting and leadership.
Encana is dedicated to the communities where we live and operate by supporting educational opportunities for youth and activities that contribute to community well being.
